A-Z of Becky: L

L is for Language

The English language is so important to me. I am ridiculously pedantic about spelling and grammar. I started reading at the age of 3 and I have never stopped. I will read anything and everything: books, magazines, shampoo labels... You name it!

There is so much you can do with language. It can be used to stir any emotion felt by a person and used for both good and evil. Plus, you can have so much fun with it; Onomatopoeia is one of my favourite things!

As well as the English language, I also love the German language. I was pretty good at it when I was in school and considered studying it at A level. In the end, I decided against it but I wish I had now. Instead, I console myself by sporadically speaking only in German and confusing everyone around me!

Just don't ask me to speak Spanish or French: I'm absolutely useless!

  1. I like language too... although at times it frustrates me how other people impose their own preferences on mine! I'm told off in my essays for using a word that is 'too strong', or 'probably not the right word' haha!

I wish I had been better / tried harder at French, I'd love to speak another language!

    1. Oh, that always annoys me too! I remember writing essays and the lecturers crossed out the words "particularly" and replaced it with "especially", or something stupid like that!

  2. I love poetry precisely for its use of language. Not even rhyming schemes; rhyming poetry has never particularly moved me. I'm talking metaphor so thick the poem literally reads like paranoid delusional rants. Love.
I also wish I had stuck with any one language long enough to really hold a conversation. I have studied French, Hebrew and Japanese, but my communication in any of those is pretty rudimentary; especially Hebrew, even though I technically studied it the longest! Go figure!

    1. I don't like rhyming poetry either. It always seems really amateur to me. How do you feel about Philip Larkin? He's my favourite poet. It's strange how much I identify with a cynical, now-deceased, middle aged male librarian!

  3. I feel exactly the same, I love words and language and people who can use them beautifully. I learned Spanish at school for about five years but have sadly forgotten loads of it!

  6. Hi-hi, ich kann nie verstehen, warum Leute so gerne Deutsch sprechen mögen. Für mich als Deutsche ist das die langweiligste Sprache der Welt!

    1. Haha ok, I'm going to try and translate this with my very limited German!

Hi. I can not understand why [more people don't?] speak German. For me, German is the best language in the world.

      Is that right?

  7. I am completely the same way. I love reading and writing, and especially English is very dear to my heart, even though it's not my first language. I think sometimes people forget to appreciate how fortunate we are to be able to express ourselves through words, and that we have so many to choose from.

  8. Hello!

I just stumbled upon your blog via IFB and I must say, after clicking through about a dozen pages, I've fallen in love! You are absolutely adorable and I love your personality! In fact, I would venture to say it is possible that we are soulmates! Hahaha. I love your style, and your pride.
Just one question to determine soulmate status: Did you turn out a Slytherin or a Hufflepuff? Y'know, after your parents?

    XOXO, Caroline
