4 women who inspire me

Tomorrow is International Women's Day. In light of this, I've decided to devote this post to the top 4 women who inspire me.

1. My mummy
My mum is a fabulous woman. Growing up, we didn't have masses of money but my mum made sure that my brother and I (eventually brothers and I) had everything we needed. I'm sure she made great sacrifices just to ensure we were happy. As an angsty teen, I didn't really appreciate her. We didn't fight or anything but I was pretty self-centered. It was only when I moved out that I really understood how fantastic a woman she was, and still is. Before Rich and I decided to marry in Florida, I wanted her to give me away at our wedding.

2. My grandma

My grandma is an inspiration for me in both my career and my personal life. As the headteacher of my local infant school, I practically grew up in school. (Yeah, ok, everyone grows up in school but I was there earlier- and longer- than most!). As I grew up, and eventually became a teacher myself, she became a huge source of career inspiration. She's my biggest champion- I think everyone she's met in the past year knows all about my career so far!- and is always the first person I tell about my latest achievements. On a personal level, she is the most stylish woman I know and she always stands her ground. Not to mention that the devotion she and my grandad had for each other is exactly what I want as I spend my life with Rich.

3. Tracey Emin
I've mentioned before how much of an art freak I am. When I was sitting my A levels, I became drawn to the controversial, twisted art of Grayson Perry, the Chapman brothers, Marc Quinn and the like. Then, of course, there's Tracey Emin. I used to be a little embarrassed that she was my favourite artist. It seemed clichéd, as if I was just going along with the crowd. But I really, truly love her work. Aged 16, Exploration of the Soul reduced me to tears in the middle of Tate Modern. Her neons are beyond incredible. Everything she has ever produced speaks to me on so many levels. I relate to so much of her work, which I think is due to the parallels of my life with hers. She had so much controversy around her art but, if anything, that just propelled her forward. I have so much admiration for her.

4. Annika of The Pineneedle Collective
In terms of bloggers, Annika is the most inspirational to me. Not only is she gorgeous, with super cute style including lots of quirky details, but she is the sweetest blogger I've ever spoken to. Even though she has a gazillion followers, she still takes the time to talk to them. On top of that, she is making science cool and really lets her fun personality shine through.

I'd love to know which women inspire you. Let me know.

  6. This is a great list! I think as teenagers we really take for granted our mothers until we grow up and realize that she's the best person in the world!

  7. This is such a touching post. Without the inspirational women in my life, I wouldn't be here today. There is nothing like the bond of a girl and her mother!
