Review: La Riche Directions hair dye in Alpine Green

I've been meaning to dye my hair for the longest time! When I was a teen, it was always in various states of pink, red or black but, as I hit my early 20s, I felt that I had to start being a bit more grown up. However, the desire has never left me, and last summer I bought bright pink dye and bleach. Evidently, I chickened out, as it's still untouched in the bathroom cabinet. So, when Hunt or Dye contacted me to choose a dye to review, I decided now was the time!

I decided to go for a dark, subtle colour. As much as I was crying out for candy floss pink or lilac, I needed something a little more discreet for work. Dark purple and blue is nice, but a little overdone, so I settled on a dark green- specifically, La Riche Directions in Alpine Green

The pot is 88ml which seems a little small at first but actually, I only used a teensy tiny bit of dye. One pot goes a long, long way! It doesn't smell horrible either, like most hair dye does. In fact, it smells like finger paint! As I was going for a subtle look, I decided to go for an ombre effect on the bottom layer only. I figured that if it went horribly wrong, at least it would be barely visible.

By the way, do you like my sexy hair dye clothes? I'm gorgeous, right?

We didn't have any gloves so Rich had to use sandwich bags as makeshift gloves. As you can imagine, they weren't the easiest to work with!

I'm not going to lie, I was pretty terrified when the dye was going on. Especially when I told Rich to "use your creative intuition". I think he'd admit that he's not the most creative person in the world!

After leaving the dye on for 15 minutes, I rinsed it out. From my teenage hair dying explorations, I remember this as the worst bit, spending at least an hour kneeling over the bath rinsing and rinsing and rinsing. This rinsed out in less than 10 minutes, which made me very happy!

Even though my hair had darkened from the wetness, I could immediately see a green shimmer. I couldn't wait for it to dry so that I could see the full result.

I love it! I only wish I'd had the confidence to really go for it. Next weekend, we're going to add more dye, leave it on for longer and use some real gloves!

I love the shade. I love that it's unusual and that it's hidden away like a little surprise. Work on top, party on the bottom! I just can't wait to add more!

I am so impressed with La Riche Directions. I really recommend it- It's easy and hassle-free to use, it doesn't take a lot of product for a good effect and the final result is gorgeous. Watch out next week for the update!

If you do want some- and you should, especially as there is such a wide colour range- you could win some through Hunt or Dye's #TweetorDye competition. Tweet @HuntorDye with the colour you want to win and why, and, if it's their favourite tweet of the day, you will win it. Don't forget to tell me what shade you decide on!

  10. The hairdresser told me that these are awesome for conditioning your hair. Leave them on for as long as possible too! I once did my hair 'forest green' on badly bleached yellow hair when I was 16, erghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh mistake and a half!
