Book review: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time- Mark Haddon
This is going to be a difficult one to review. Mostly because it moves really quickly from one event to another, so it's hard to outline the plot without giving anything away.

Christopher is a 15 year old boy with Asperger's Syndrome, who discovers that his neighbour's dog has been killed. He liked Wellington, the dog, so he takes it upon himself to discover who the culprit is. As he investigates, he uncovers more about his own life and ends up stumbling through an adventure of his own.

I liked Christopher a lot. His way of looking at the world is so simple, really. His storytelling leads you to believe that we overcomplicate things. He's such a kind-hearted boy, and he doesn't understand the complex range of human emotions. He believes in truth and honesty at all times, and is deeply hurt if somebody he loves does not follow his moral ideals. As his story unravels, I started to relate to him more and more. I think everybody would- We all have similarities to Christopher.

The storytelling is unique in its simplicity, accompanied by drawings and diagrams, as if written by Christopher himself. This makes it extremely accessible and really opens up the world of somebody living with Asperger's Syndrome.

I was really rooting for Christopher throughout. As events develop unexpectedly, I was willing him on and mentally cheering for him when things went well for him. It ends very positively, even though things might not be perfect.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was so gripping and easy to read that I read it in two sittings (I could have done it in one sitting but Rich was nagging me to turn the light off so he could sleep!). I definitely recommend it!

  2. I'm guessing the play of the same name was adapted from this book? Didn't realise it was a book first, will have to read before I go and see the play!

    1. Yes it was. I think the book was released about 2000 or so, so it's quite old now.

  5. This book was so sad. I don't think I related to Christopher as much as I thought I would. I know it's a great, classic book but apart from it being an eye opener, I wouldn't read it again x
