Book Review // The Creature Vault

When Leona visited last month so we could visit the Harry Potter Studio Tour, we exchanged Christmas presents. One of the lovely gifts she'd bought me was this beauty: The Creature Vault!

The Creature Vault is a stunning coffee table book detailing all the creatures that feature in the Harry Potter film series with information on how they were developed, from concept art right up to filming. With gorgeous original artwork, often including several initial ideas of creatures' appearances, and behind-the-scenes photos from the film sets, the book is stuffed full of fascinating information for Harry Potter fans. There's even a poster included!

Of course I absolutely loved this book! As a pretty hardcore Harry Potter fan, I already have a lot of knowledge about the films but I learned so much that I didn't already know. Art is one of my passions, so it was incredible seeing all the concept art, especially the different ideas. One of my favourite pages featured different varieties of Dobby from the concept artists. Spoiler alert: The one they eventually used was definitely the cutest!
Surprisingly for an endorsed product, there were a few grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation, including a missing full stop on the back cover! I also found it a bit annoying that it's entirely based on the American films so uses the Sorcerer's Stone, which makes my toes curl! Nevertheless, it was a fascinating, beautiful book and I'm so grateful to Leona for such a wonderful, thoughtful gift!

For me, I would give this a rating of 7 out of 10. It's the perfect coffee table book and I'd definitely recommend it for any Harry Potter fan.

  1. I keep seeing this book in Waterstones, but haven't got around to buying it! I've love to add it to my collection! Concept art is always beautiful, it's great to see the amount of production that goes into something!

  4. Yayyyy! I have this book too! My parents bought it for me for Christmas :D I love it so much. I have to say I didn't notice the grammatical errors, which is weird cos I always do! I think I was so drawn in by the beautiful concept art I for once didn't care! I love art too and would love to do concept art myself. I have the poster next to my bed too ;)

  6. It looks stunning, though the Americanism would probably drive me mad. Still, I can't say I'd complain if I ever got hold of a copy!
