Junkyard Golf Club, Manchester

While visiting my brother in Manchester last week, he told me about a pop up bar called Junkyard Golf Club with two mini golf courses made up entirely of salvaged materials. After grabbing food in Almost Famous- as is becoming our Manchester tradition- we headed next door to experience Junkyard Golf for ourselves.

We visited on a Thursday evening and it was pretty packed, although service at the bar was quick. On entry, you receive one club for your group and a couple of golf balls, and are given the choice of two golf courses, Fred or Gertrude. We settled on the latter as it had the shortest queue and I think this turned out to be the best option. Although Fred has a slide, Gertrude is on two levels and includes a UV room which plays German industrial.

As the courses are based around the found materials, each hole has a different creative theme. My favourite was the corner bath with a resin skeleton lounging in dirty water. Poor Jamie had to fish my golf ball out of the tub as there was no way I was sticking my hand in that scum!

The entire course took us around an hour to complete, although we were stuck between a large group for the first half before they kindly let us nip in front. This is the one downside- if you're behind a large group, there's a lot of waiting around while you wait for everybody to take their turn but this can't be helped!

We were pretty tired by the end of the round so headed back to Jamie's but we could have chilled out on the squishy sofas with a drink. Of course the sofas were also second hand so they had a 90s living room vibe going on, with old video games, a dart board and textured wallpaper. The music complimented this theme with classic 90s and early-00s hits. We could also have completed the course again or tried Fred, as you don't hand in your club and golf ball until you leave.

It was a really fun way to spend the evening and definitely something to check out if you're going to be in Manchester before it closes in early April.
