Untersberg Mountain in Winter

Remember that time I climbed a literal mountain (kind of)? Well, I only went and did it again (kind of). Having experienced the Untersberg in summer, I was keen to see what it was like at the end of the year. Unfortunately, every day we were in Salzburg was super cloudy and foggy but I figured it would still be a fun experience to climb into the clouds. In fact, in some ways, it was even better!
Standing on top of the world
In my original post, I wrote a lot about the journey to the mountain and up the cable car so I won't go into that again now, except to point out that the climb up was still terrifying. At least I had Rich with me this time so I could cling on to him for dear life and pray for solid ground.

Being winter and all, there was a fair bit of snow on the ground so I didn't fancy my chances climbing up to the Hochthron peak. I did consider it but after seeing a few people slipping on the ice as they descended, I was convinced that it was not the best idea. It was scary enough climbing down when the paths were clear since there's nothing to stop you tumbling over the edge so chuck in the added danger of slippery tracks and I am staying well away.

Instead, we climbed up to the smaller Geierick peak which is just behind the cafe and honestly too short a walk to even be called a climb. Still, at 1806 metres, there are some beautiful views. Although it was a foggy day, the mountain peaks were above the clouds, meaning we had beautiful blue skies and bright sunshine reflecting off the snow. Because of this, we could see the tops of mountains jutting out of the clouds for miles and miles. As well as being absolutely stunning, it was a weird experience to be standing above the clouds- like we were in heaven or something.

To our surprise, despite the freezing cold temperatures down in the city, at the top of the mountain it was fairly warm. I mean, not warm enough to be stripping off our coats of course, but we both had to remove our hats and gloves to cool down a bit.
Untersberg Ravens Untersberg Crows
The Untersberg ravens were in full flow, swamping two poor girls who had decided to stop for a snack at the top. We all had a right laugh when a bird landed on top of one girl's head! Memo to self- don't eat food unless you want to be like the badass who was chilling out with the ravens à la the Bird Lady in Home Alone 2.

We had a wonderful time experiencing the Untersberg in winter. I can't wait to return next time.
