February Reading Round Up

I went from reading 14 books in January to just 3 in February. That's not great, is it? I don't even know why it dropped so much- I was way busier in January than I've been this month. Perhaps it's because I don't have any short books left over, or because I've been tackling the bloody massive Order of the Phoenix for a couple of weeks. Either way, there's no denying that February wasn't the most productive of reading months.
#GIRLBOSS

Oh Jesus, this book. I've been meaning to read it ever since it was released in 2014 to huge hype so when I spotted it at the Read Eat Blog book swap, I pounced on it. Unfortunately, it was not for me at all. For one thing, I've never been keen on the name. Why do we have to be girl bosses? Why not just bosses? Anyway, I could get past that until the author, Sophia Amoruso, started saying that we don't need to talk about feminism any more because now women can get degrees. It was filled with ignorant, self-centred opinions such as this and the old 'just work hard and anyone can be successful' spiel. She just came across as arrogant and completely unaware of the difficulties people who aren't as privileged as her face. Then there's all the repetition, the constant contradiction (don't let anyone tell you what to wear but you wouldn't be hired if you don't wear a bra), and typos. It's such a shame because I'd heard so many good things about it. I feel bad because whoever bought it to the book swap obviously enjoyed it but I guess that's just the way it goes at times- not everyone can like the same books. I since found out that the company is undergoing several lawsuits for the likes of disability and maternity discrimination and honestly, after reading this book, I can't say I'm surprised.

HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE

Like Prisoner of Azkaban, which I read last month, I've lost my classic version so I read this really pretty edition. It's a shame to keep them in the box set really as they're so lovely. The last four Harry Potter books aren't my favourite, but I love them all the same. Goblet of Fire is when the story starts getting a bit more complex and the books get much longer. I remember seeing this book for the first time when it was released and I nearly had a heart attack. As a 12 year old, it was the biggest book I'd ever read and I was hugely intimidated. These days it's not quite so scary but I still prefer the first three!

MEMENTO MORI

I bought this book because I figured it would be useful for my Death in Visual Culture module and I was completely taken by surprise when it arrived. It's absolutely huge and it's covered in this gorgeous blue satin. With full page and double page spread photographs inside, it feels really special. Photographer Paul Koudounaris has travelled across the globe, documenting the way different cultures use bones to remember the dead. From the painted skulls of Hallstatt in Austria to the skull shrines in Bolivia, there are dozens of fascinating examples included. If you're interested in death culture and ritual, I really recommend it.

Although February may not have been great, I'm anticipating March will be much better. I'm already close to finishing two books, so I should get them completed in the first couple of days. I need to step it up!

  1. I set myself a a goal for this year to read a book a month, yet we're now in March and I've read one and a half...not doing too well myself either :/ I was actually going to buy the girl boss book, but now I've read this, it doesn't sound like my sort of book at all! I hate those sort of people that are that type of way :/

  2. February was a great reading month for me, but March is proving to be pretty rubbish so far. I think I've only read one book, and we're about halfway through?! I've got Girlboss on my pile to read, but it sounds awful, so I won't rush to it :( x www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

  4. Whoah, I'm glad I read this! I had GirlBoss on my wishlist but you made me reconsider it and read more reviews.. I think it's not for me. I don't like that style of "anyone can be successful"stories at all.
