Songs that shaped my life

Whilst hanging around the train station last week, I popped into the shop to browse the magazines and waste some time. I picked up a copy of Kerrang!, mainly due to the huge EMO headline. We all know how much I love emo!

Anyway, I found the "Songs that Saved my Life" article really interesting. It reminded me of the Books that Changed my Life articles in Elle that inspired this post. I thought it would be fun to create my own list of the songs that changed my life.

The first song I remember
Dream a Little Dream of me- Mama Cass
This song was my favourite as a child. It still is one of my favourites, in fact. My dad was a huge fan of the Mamas and the Papas, and I used to ask him to play the album loudly so that I could hear it from my bedroom as I drifted off to sleep at night.

My favourite song at school
MmmBop- Hanson
In primary school, I was a huge Hanson fan. I had a whole wall dedicated to posters of them, and I got to see them in Wembley for my best friend's 10th birthday, although we were stuck at the back so we couldn't actually see a thing. I blame them for my love of men with long hair! This song still puts me in an instant good mood. Seriously, who can't resist smiling when they hear it?

The first song I ever learned to play
Hurt- Johnny Cash
I'm not exactly a talented musician, but I did pick up the ukulele last year. I tried this song first as it was slow, simple and it's one of Rich's favourites so I wanted to surprise him with it. Although I don't play anywhere near as much as I'd like to, I still remember this one.

The saddest song I've ever heard
Drugs Don't Work- The Verve
I remember when this song was released, and my dad told me the story behind it. It wasn't until I was older that I could really appreciate how desperately heartbreaking it is. The melodies go so perfectly with the sentiment. It's such a simple song. The softness of it just highlights the true grief that it's written in ode to.

The song that makes me want to dance
SexyBack- Justin Timberlake
Back in 2006, when I was a hardcore emo kid, I heard this song for the first time in the Winchester New Look branch. I hated it. I seriously thought it was the most awful song I'd ever heard. Then, a year later, it started playing as an ironic warm up in the rock club that I used to go to. Suddenly, I couldn't help but love it. It's such a great song. I'm not ashamed to admit it's one of my favourite songs ever.

The song I fell in love to
Demolition Lovers- My Chemical Romance
This is the wrong album cover, I know, but the artwork is called Demolion Lovers II so it fits.
This is a tricky one because I can't really remember any specific songs that I relate to falling in love for the first time. This song was one that I had loved for a year or so before I fell in love, but it definitely reminded me of our relationship when we were together. We had a very intense relationship, to say the least. No violence or anything, don't get the wrong idea, but definitely fiery. Although we didn't work out as a couple, we're still good friends today.

The song I want played at my funeral
Dedicated to the One I Love- The Mamas and The Papas
Yep, the Mamas and the Papas again. This song is so beautiful. It's very typical funeral song. However, I'd also like to take a leaf out of my uncle's book, who had Monty Python's Always Look on the Bright Side of Life played at his. I think I'd plump for something like U Can't Touch This. How fun would that be?

The best song ever written
Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen
Oh come on! There's no debating this, surely. It has everything you could ever want: Slow melodies, rocking guitar solos, The Ultimate Headbanging Moment, epic anthemic tunes, poignant lyrics and the singalong potential to end all singalongs. Altogether now: "Nothing really matters. Anyone can seeeeeee".

  3. What a list! I asked my friend Lucas to sing "Ain't No Sunshine" at my funeral when I die. It was quite the conversation - but I do love that song and think it is perfect for funeral tunes.

  5. I love this post! I might as well do something alike, but with the albums that shaped my life... if you don't mind! Ahah! Mama Cass had such a soothing voice :) SEXYBACK was the hit!!! I'm not a Timberlake fan but c'mon, got to admit that there's rythm in that track.
