I'm pretty sure every blogger has felt envious at some point. I know I have! I remember looking at one particular blog, which had 300 followers, and being desperately jealous that, although it had started in the same month as me, it had so many more followers than mine did.
Of course, the problem is that jealousy gets you nowhere. All it does it fester inside you and turn you bitter. Not exactly the most productive approach!
Luckily, I managed to turn this around and use it to my advantage. It might sound odd, but it is possible to turn blogger envy into a positive.
By the way, I struggled to find relevant photos for this, so I used photos of me with other bloggers. You know, to represent harmony within the blogging community or something. Mostly of Leona since I don't have many other photos of me with other bloggers.
Me with Helen, Becca and Islay. Photo taken by Islay.
1. Retain perspective
I used to be so envious of blogs with over 1000 followers, despite the fact that some of those blogs were a year or two older than mine. I found it really helpful to go back through the archives of my favourite blogs and look at their early posts. It was a huge relief to see that they weren't the insanely good posts produced later. It made me realise that I could improve the way they have. For this reason, I've kept all of my early posts intact. Go and look through them if you want. They're terrible!
2. Use your favourite bloggers as inspiration
Now, I'm not talking about copying. Don't copy! But use them as your motivation. What do you love about this blogger? If you love their use of photography, try to use a couple of their strategies. If it's their witty writing style that draws you in, work on adding humour to yours. Love their creativity? Spend some time developing your own. You get the picture.
3. Get to know them!
It's hard to be jealous of somebody who you really like. Get to know the bloggers you look up to. Chat to them on Twitter, comment on their blog posts, drop them an email. If there's something you want to know, ask them! Ok, not everyone will reply, but they might give you some great advice.
4. Help others
You never know, somebody might be jealous of you too! Think about what you do really well. Are you an amazing artist? Do you create incredible outfits or great photos? Use your strengths and advise others on how to improve. Once you realise that you have great talent too, it's easier to cope with envy.
5. Focus on yourself
Similarly, concentrate on yourself. It's difficult not to compare yourself with others. Ok, so your favourite blogger takes perfect photos, but do they write as well as you do? Not everyone is perfect but everybody has something they're great at, and that includes you! Write a list of everything you are good at. Whenever you feel those pangs of jealousy setting in, take a look at your list and remind yourself of how awesome you are!
I hope that helps somewhat. Blogger envy is a pain but it doesn't need to be a negative. If you have any other tips, let me know!
I definitely get blogger jealousy sometimes, but I try to reverse that by complimenting blogs I like excessively and posting lots of nice comments :) Connecting with bloggers also make me feel proud of them instead of jealous when they achieve amazing accomplishments. Like when Jes achieved some mega-fame on The Militant Baker I was beaming with pride for her!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great post :)

Envy is when we see other blogs with so many followers and suddenly we feel very lonely. But sometimes it becomes the right motivation too, in order to be better blogger and to make our blog better. Don't you agree? Thank you for sharing your though on this issue :)

This is such a good post, Becky. I really hate that I haven't met any bloggers yet as I'd just missed a blogger event when I joined the blogging world, but there is one coming up in Cardiff soon so I'm super excited about that (and it's just after my birthday, yay!) I always try and take inspiration from people to help improve my own blog, as I'm sure it's lacking that certain sparkle!

these tips are great, I'm sure most people compare blogs and feel a little down n theirs at times. Just have to remember these points, and go from strength to strength. :-) glad I read this xx
ReplyDeleteThis is a really amazing post, Becky! I try really, really hard not to get jealous of other blogs. And usually when I do, it is because they've bought a product I've been lusting over! The times when I do get jealous of a blogger, I use it to fuel my blogging fire! It helps me work that little bit harder to try and better my blog and myself!
ReplyDeleteAnd then I remember that this isn't a race for one top blogger spot! There is room for all of us, and the best thing we can do for each other is to show support and build community. When I think of it like that, it usually defuses any jealousy I'd been brewing!

I definitely suffer from Blogger envy sometimes. It's hard, but you have to remember, maybe they didn't just wake up one night to a zillion followers, maybe they worked just as hard as you are!

I feel like this sometimes, especially when, like you, i see someone who started after me with 1000+ followers I'm like 'how'? but then I think it doesn't make me any worse a blogger for only having 700 and odd... I'm thankful for my readers and I take inspiration from other bloggers to improve my own blog!

Definitely a nice reminder! Sometimes it's hard to remember WHY I started blogging in the first place. Thanks for this :)

I just wrote a post on my own experiences with this as my jealousy often makes me want to give up on blogging all together. Mara Glatzel, one of the first blogs I started reading, has written some awesome posts on how jealousy is a way of knowing what you really, really want. This perspective has helped me immensely in this struggle!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, it is human nature to always compare yourself to other and the trouble is there is ALWAYS going to be someone who is more educated, more charismatic, has more readers/blog view than you. Healthy competition is good, it is what makes us driven to succeed I believe, but it is always the most important to just focus on yourself!

I definitely feel better when I get to now a blogger, looking at a high follower count can put me off the blogger, but once I've chatted with some over Twitter I haven't thought twice about following! x
ReplyDeleteAmazing posts! So well written :)

What a really great post, I definitely get jealous of other bloggers but I'm going to focus that into positivity and use it to improve my fashion blog :))

And you know what, it never goes away. Even if you exceed your expectations, there will always be a higher standard to compare yourself to. Best to keep it real just as you're sayin. Much love.
ReplyDeleteSince day one I have told myself that I have to find my own voice and be myself. Being myself is what will attract readers not trying to bite off everyone else's blog that I envy.
ReplyDeleteI just focus on producing good content and communicating with my fellow bloggers. Followers are nice but they are not the only reason why I blog, I blog because I love to.
Thanks for the good post and tips!!
these are really great tips! :D
ReplyDeletep.s. i think you have a really awesome blog!

What a clever Idea for a post!! :) Blogger envy is something I know very well! Sometimes when I see blogs that started well after mine and have over 500 followers it makes me question my blogging skills, makes me think I'm not good at it, however I just tell myself, I didn't start my blog for the followers I started it to be able to ramble on about the things I love and maybe people would like to read it aswell. :) Loved this post!!

Great post which has made me feel better about my blog x
ReplyDeleteI've never thought about blogger envy this way. This post really gave me a little piece of wisdom. Now I can look in envy at your 1000+ followers, you've reached this point as a blogger;)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant tips. Your tips about old posts strikes true for me! I was feeling mega intimidated of all these lovely blogs and I decided to go right back and have a look at the first posts from people. I felt much better and tell myself Rome wasn't built in a day ;)

Brilliant post. So true that it helps to focus on what you as an individual are good at :)

ReplyDeleteIt's nice to read that I'm not the only one that gets this. Especially being a new blogger I look at pretty much everyone's and envy a little something.
ReplyDeleteI'm just trying to concentrate on bettering myself and my posts and learn from others.
Thank you for the tips.

I love going through archives of some of my favourite bloggers! I hate it when people go back nd delete their old posts as well. Yea it might be a bit embarrassing but if it helps inspire and encourage someone else then I'm all for leaving them there.
