My fears
Leona posted all about her fears this week and, because I'm a plagiarist, I've completely stolen her idea! Now, I'm an exceptionally anxious person and I have a huge amount of fears. Most of them are pretty rational. I just take them to a wholly irrational place!
So, in reverse order, here are my top 5 fears:
5. May bugs
When I was 18, my friends and I went out one summer evening. We spent ages straightening my hair so I wore it down, which was a very unusual occurence. Almost as soon as we walked out the front door, a massive may bug flew into my hair and got stuck. Neither of my friends would come near me, but one helpfully threw her handbag at my head and knocked it out. I've been terrified of them ever since. May bugs, that is, not handbags...
4. Small talk
Ok, so none of us like this. Except my mum. She's like Forrest Gump- She talks to everybody. Somehow, I inherited the total opposite of that gene. I don't just feel uncomfortable making small talk with strangers but with colleagues, aquaintances and relatives too. I'm just a highly socially awkward person!
3. Flying
Until I was 16, I loved flying. Then we went to Ibiza and I felt like I was going to die during the whole flight. Now I can't enter a plane without thinking "This is where I'm going to die". I just don't understand how something that big and heavy can be in the air. It's not right! And I know you're more likely to die in a car accident but exactly what are the chances of surviving on a plane dropping out of the sky? Exactly!
2. The phone
This goes hand in hand with small talk but I really struggle using the phone. And when I say struggle, I mean I don't use it. Ever. Unless it's Rich, my brothers or my mum. If you ever get my number for whatever reason, don't call me. I won't answer. It's better to just text. My avoidance of the phone is so extreme that, when I was at uni, I lost a job because I wouldn't call my boss when asked.
1. Edward Scissorhands
Let me say this once: When I say I'm scared of Edward Scissorhands, I mean I will cry and have a panic attack if I'm suddenly subjected to a photo. My brothers think it's funny to spring photos on me unexpectedly. It's really, really not. Last year, I managed to listen to the soundtrack, although I did cry through the whole thing. I haven't drummed up the courage to try a video clip though. My fear is so all-encompassing that it has spawned a million related fears- Scissors, the noise of scissors, whisks, mechanical kitchen machines, hedges shaped like animals...
What are your fears?
You're scared of Edward Scissorhands? Oh my, I suppose he is a little scary! I'm with you on the phonecall thing, I normally break out into a cold sweat on the phone!x
ReplyDeleteHe is TERRIFYING!
DeleteHahaha, I think he's kind of sweet. This says a lot about me as a person, no?
DeleteThis is a great idea for a post. I also struggle with the phone. I always jump out of my skin when it rings and then I'm all "Oh no, I'm gonna have to answer it!"

I just don't answer it!
DeleteI'd be too worried about posting my fears - someone mean might take advantage of the information!

Aaw, I'm sure they wouldn't!
DeleteI hate small talk too. Very annoying and a but of a waste of time. My mum's a hairdresser so is also a small talk queen!

Why are mums always so good at it?
DeleteI'm the same way about flying. I get really claustrophobic after awhile, and turbulence freaks me out!
ReplyDeletexoxo, Lizzy
Turbulence is the worst!
DeleteI understand your fear of small talks. They are just awful! Most of the time I feel like an idiot and people probably think the same :)x
ReplyDeleteHaha same here! I just end up saying nothing and looking around in a really awkward silence!
DeleteI think small talk is one of my talents, I am worse trying to have a 'proper' in depth convo! I can't handle the phone either, worst invention ever really!

It really is! I have no idea how you do small talk!
DeleteI avoid the phone and small talk as well. I hate it! Even with my best friends who I've known for 20 years!
ReplyDeleteSame here!
DeleteI hate the phone as well. I refuse to answer my phone 99% of the time!
ReplyDeleteI detest phones too, they are awful. Great for texting, but yeah if you call me i'll never answer. Unless it's my husband. Other then that, I won't answer or return your calls. I won't even dial my answer phone!
ReplyDeleteHaha same here. I hate my own answer phone too!
DeleteI can understand the Edward Scissorhands thing! I wouldn't say it's a fear, but the TV show Casualty really unnerves me, I can't watch it and even the theme tune puts me on edge. Especially strange as I'm fine with gore and such, I think it just freaked me out when I was a kid and ever since then it's just made me feel odd! x
ReplyDeleteI totally understand that! I can't watch it either. It's the beginning bit where you've got a man up a ladder with a chainsaw and a kid skipping around the corner or whatever!
Deleteomg yeah sometimes its hard for me to start a convo w/ strangers too..socially awkward much lol. but my biggest fear is...ants. yeah i have a phobia w/ ants ><
ReplyDeleteI'm not scared of Edward Scissorhands, but I do have exactly the same thing with ET! I am also terrified of large replica whales or dinosaurs like you get in a museum. I have no idea why!
ReplyDeleteI can understand that. He doesn't scare me but I can see why we would creep people out!
DeleteI have 2 weird fears:
ReplyDeleteSlugs/Snails/Worms- even saying it makes me want to cry (However I have no problem with spiders etc, snakes, lizards, big dogs)
E.T. Was terrified of E.T when I was a kid, still not seen the film and probably never will x
You're the second person to say ET! He doesn't scare me but he is a bit creepy!
DeleteEdward Scissorhands was TERRIFYING! But, for me, Freddy Krueger took the cake, I literally didn't sleep for five days, worst week of my childhood life.

I'm so glad that I have NEVER seen Nightmare on Elm Street!
DeleteWhat an insightful post. I'm glad that I'm not the only one with a fear of phones and small talk. I'm socially awkward as well and a complete introvert. I prefer emails and texts over the phone. I also have a phobia called Trypophobia. Just thinking and typing it is making me feel funny!

Ooh I know that one but it's not one I have myself.
DeleteI love small talk haha :P I'm terrified of clowns and all sorts! I have a terrible imagination so scare myself haha :P xx
ReplyDeleteClowns are pretty creepy!
DeleteI can't believe your scared of Edward Scissorhands, i think i actually love him.....or Jonny Deep anyway. Im quite an anxious person too driving scares me lot more then flying, but i think it's because theirs so many knob heads on the road xxx
ReplyDeleteJohnny Depp is lovely but Edward Scissorhands is terrifying!
DeleteDefinitely with you on the phones thing. And I'm not a huge fan of small talk either. When it comes to bugs and stuff bees, wasps and to a lesser extent flies and moths are my thing. Bees and wasps I will jump in front of a car to avoid (almost have before) but flies and moths I'll just shudder and duck a lot. My other big things are clowns and thunder and lightning.
ReplyDeleteI don't like thunder and lightning either!
DeleteI am not a phone-person too! Well unless it's my mom or dad or the sibs. What do you call this kind of thing with phones anyway?

I don't know if it has a name. I bet it does!
DeleteOh my God, that sounds awful!
