Pixar PJ Party at Prince Charles Cinema

The Prince Charles Cinema in London is one of my favourite places to visit in the capital. I'm not much of a film person really. I get restless having to sit still and do nothing but watch a screen for two hours but, despite this, I love the PCC. It shows classic films and has special events such as the Muppets Christmas Carol Singalong and Wayne's World Schwingalong. In fact, I love it so much that I've bought an annual membership and what better way to use it than spend an entire night watching Pixar films back to back?

I met up with Laura from Cherry Soda at the cinema and, because I'm an idiot who can't read 24 hour time, we got there an hour and a half early. This turned out to be for the best though, as neither of us had eaten so we headed around the corner for my first visit to Five Guys.

Although there was a massive queue stretching around the outside the restaurant, it only took us about 10 minutes to get to the tills. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and chips. I was very glad to discover that you request toppings at the till so I didn't have to pick out any tomatoes or onions. Woohoo!

The fries were delicious, and they had a sign at the door saying that the potatoes that day were from Holland. They tasted really fresh and potato-y. Yes, that is a valid adjective!

Mmmm burger heaven! The burger was delicious, but the best thing about it was the amazingly soft bun. None of this carboard texture that you find in other restaurants. Yum yum yum!

After filling up (and then some!), we headed back to the cinema. They opened up late, so we had to stand around in the boiling hot, jampacked foyer for about 45 minutes which was absolutely horrible but when we finally got in, we managed to bag some great seats. I managed to watch Toy Story, A Bug's Life and Monsters, Inc before falling asleep through most of Finding Nemo

The screening was popular but not sold out, so I commandeered four chairs and lifted up their arm rests to make a bed. It was so comfy! The chairs are squishy leather and fairly deep, so I didn't feel like I was falling off at any point. I slept all through The Incredibles and Wall-E then woke up to watch Up, meaning I had a pretty decent 6 hours' sleep.

We felt very proud of ourselves to still be there at 9:30 in the morning and eagerly ran up to the front to be a part of the survivors' photo.
When I got to Waterloo, I had a little bit of time to spare so I popped into the Foyles there. It's the most beautiful bookshop I've ever been in. Look at this lampshade! I definitely need one for my house!
Look at all this Murakami! Are you proud of me for not buying anything?
On the train, I lived like it was 2005 with My Chemical Romance and Kerrang!
I think the sleep did me well- I look pretty perky for someone who spent the night in a cinema!

Mother's Day wishlist

Mother's Day is next weekend and, as I do every year, I've left everything to the last minute. I still have absolutely no idea what to buy my mum so I decided to have a look on Etsy. Of course, there's always going to be something lovely on there.

Awkward Phases card
I love this card because I had an insane number of awkward phases growing up!

Mummy Bird necklace
This is not only absolutely adorable, but totally customisable. You can have anywhere between 1 and 8 baby birds, there's options for them to have initials engraved into them and you can also buy necklaces with one Mummy bird for single mothers.

Initial necklace
I just love the simplicity of this necklace. It's so cute and could be worn with anything.

Mum papercut
Papercuts are so pretty and this one is beautiful. I love the birds and the nest, and the quote is really sweet.

Map of the World print
Another personalisable piece, you can add a message to the bottom right of this antique-inspired map of the world. This would be so perfect for a mum who lives far away.

I still need to find the perfect present for my mum but at least I have some ideas now! What are you giving to yours?

Kelly's Inspired by Mum post is incredible! I'd like to do something like this.

Other stuff
Murakami's latest novel is being published in English on the 12th August. That's the day before our wedding! Should I be this excited about it when my wedding is the next day?

Rich showed me this Snape bank note and it absolutely cracked me up!

Boohoo have launched a fantastic plus size range. Goodbye bank balance!

Bats are one of my favourite animals, so these 25 cutest bat species made my heart melt!

Book review: Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World- Haruki Murakami
Ok, time to review my 8th Murakami. Hard-Boiled Wonderland is one that has been recommended to me a few times but, to be brutally honest, the title didn't really convince me. I know that's ridiculous but there you go! However, I chose this as one of my Christmas presents, and I'm very glad I did!

Hard-Boiled Wonderland is two narratives in one, told in alternating chapters. Although this is explained in the blurb, I evidently wasn't paying attention as I was getting all confused and it took me about 100 pages before I worked it out! I know, I'm an idiot!
As is frequently the case with Murakami's books, the narrators are unnamed, male (presumably) and divorced. However, many of the Murakami clichés are missing: There are no cats, I didn't catch any mentions of cooking spaghetti and there are only two references to female ears. The story is also noticeably different in form. Although there are the usual surreal elements and the whole concept of parallel universes is apparent, the story seems a little less fantastical than his others. I put this down to this being one of Murakami's earlier works.

The tone of the book is also remarkably different to his others, but I think that's because it was translated by Alfred Birnbaum, whose translations are new to me. I found a lot of the interpretation quite clumsy but at least there was none of Jay Rubin's "I wonder"s, which always annoy me! Instead we had a lot of "maybe so"s, which make a lot more sense in context!
I enjoyed the story very much. I found it easy to connect with the characters and, as the links between the two narratives became more clear, I found myself drawn further and further into the story. Although it's not one I'd recommend to somebody new to Murakami (I favour Sputnik Sweetheart or Norwegian Wood for that), it's definitely one I'd suggest as a follow-up.

Sponsor Shoutout: Kotryna Bass Design

I feel so lucky to have the wonderful Kotryna sponsoring my blog again this month. As I explained last month, Kotryna Bass Design is the perfect place to go for affordable blog designs. Whether you want a premade template, the odd personalised element or a full-on bespoke layout, Kotryna will have something for you.

Last month I detailed the great things about Kotryna Bass Design: Her super affordable prices (from just £12.50!), gorgeous simple designs and her knowledgeable background in computer science. When I posted her feature, I received a whole bunch of tweets recommending her. Kotryna's reputation is solid, both on Etsy (an average of the maximum 5 stars!) and on social media.

With all of these things established, I thought now would be the perfect time to share my five favourite layouts from Kotryna.

1. Soft Candy
This sweet design is perfect for young, feminine bloggers. I love the pink details and the simplicity of the navigation bar at the top.

2. Love Story
The contrast between the black and blush pink is perfect here. It's simple and minimalist, but with a little interesting highlight.

I adore the font of the title here. It's fun but not in-your-face, and the white background keeps Kotryna's trademark simplicity in check.

This is a little fancier than Kotryna's other designs but it works really nicely. The cute details around the profile photo and title are absolutely adorable, and the soft colour palette is gorgeous.

Back to the more simple designs but I love the little arrow design. The font has a fun element to it that makes it perfect for more casual blogs.

If you're looking for a new design, or a little touch up, I can wholeheartedly recommend Kotryna! I'd also love to know your experiences of working with her.
