How it feels to have your car stolen

Those of you who follow me on Twitter may have seen that, on Friday, my car was stolen. I got home from work as usual and there was a different car in his usual space. Suspecting Rich had moved it for some reason or other, I asked him where the car had gone but he had no idea. It had just disappeared.
As you can imagine, I was pretty devastated. I can't actually drive right now (although I am having lessons), but I bought my car a little while ago from a colleague who was moving to Australia. I actually posted all about it when I bought him. I called him Ernie, although I'm sure everybody knows you should never name anything, or you'll become far too attached!

I never even got to drive him, although he had L plates on. Who steals a car with L plates on? Horrible people, that's who!
In a way, I felt like I had a play to part. The car has been parked outside my house forever, so the theives have probably been watching for a while. It seems to have been a professional operation. His battery was completely dead, and there was no smashed glass, so I wasn't sure how they'd taken him. When we looked closely at the road, we could see scuffs and scrapes where his wheels had been. It's pretty evident that they had towed him away.

Although I'm pretty upset, there's no use dwelling on it. He's gone and crying isn't going to make a difference. Maybe I'll be able to buy an even better one. Trust me to have my first car stolen. It's like my engagement rings all over again.

  2. are you sure it wasn't just the council who towed him? they might've thought it was just an abandoned car if it was left there for so long! oh noes! x

  3. Have you been to the police? Or even the council to make sure it wasn't them for some unkown reason? Not sure what the likelihood of getting him back is, fingers crossed for you though xx

  6. Oh my gosh, I must have missed this on Twitter, but I am SO sorry to hear this :/ I've fortunately never had my car actually stolen (just broken into), so I can't imagine how that feels.

  11. Sorry to hear that Ernie got stolen, Becky! I once had my handbag stolen, and it really makes you feel very violated. I really hope you'll be able to get a replacement that's just as good (if not better!) very soon.

  14. Are you sure it wasn't the council that towed it away? They might have thought it had been abandoned because you hadn't moved it for so long? Maybe give them a call! xx

  16. I know how you feel, it's crap isn't it. My car was stolen on a night out in Bristol with my boyfriend (many many years ago, he's now the husband). It was parked in a multistorey with security but they just watched it drive out smashing through the barriers claiming the council wouldn't let them do anything. We complained to the council, naturally.

It's the sense of disbelief that's weird, you think oh, I must have left it somewhere else, then think it slowly dawns on you that, no, you were right in the first place and it's just gone.

I really hope the police find it and it turns up somewhere xx

  20. Oh no! I'm really sorry to hear that :( Agree with the others to check with the council first though in case he's been towed by mistake. Otherwise, I hope you can find a replacement soon!
