Top 5 book covers

There's a cliché here that I am avoiding at all costs but a beautiful book cover can make all the difference for me. I'm the sort of person who will spend more on the edition with the pretties cover. With that in mind, I've raided my bookshelf to choose my five favourites.
Books with pretty covers

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT
Beautiful copy of All Quiet on the Western Front
This is such a stunningly beautiful, poignant design for the WWI novel. The simple colour palette is perfect, not to mention that the background appears to be bandages. It's such a moving, thoughtful cover and really does justice to the story.

PERFUME
Beautiful copy of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Just look at it! The cover for Perfume couldn't be more different to that of All Quiet on the Western Front, what with its opulence and extravagance. The gothic style is perfectly suited to the twisted tale and I love how intricate it is, with little hidden gems.

THE GREAT GATSBY
Beautiful copy of The Great Gatsby
Obviously you can tell just from looking at this cover that it's going to be set in the 20s. I adore the Art Deco design, although the simplicity doesn't quite live up to the lavish lifestyle that Gatsby lives. Nevertheless, it's a copy I went out of my way to obtain because it's so beautiful!

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Beautiful copy of A Christmas Carol
I love all of the Penguin Clothbound Classics, with their simple, repeated motifs and subtle colour schemes but this, the only one I own, is possibly my favourite. It's so festive and the colours are gorgeous together. It also has a little ribbon bookmark. Little things please me!

LOOK WHO'S BACK
Clever design of Look Who's Back
Ok, this might not be quite the same as the others. The cover may not be beautiful but it sure is clever. You know exactly who this book's about, right? A witty design that really sets the scene for the funny, slightly twisted narrative inside.

  1. That Gatsby cover is DIVINE - I'm a sucker for pretty gold foil on a book cover ;) Xx

  2. I'm looking for a beautiful clothbound copy of Frankenstein, one of my favourite classics, to go with my clothbound Sherlock Holmes and Great Expectations. But the Penguin clothbound series Frankenstein has a colour scheme I'm not really into :(

  3. Such a fun post Becky! I am definitely swayed by pretty and striking book covers too. My friend was reading Perfume the other day and I noticed how interesting and bold the cover was, and your copy of A Christmas Carol is so pretty! I love the style of the Tales of the City books :) x

  4. I love the clothbound books! The others look beautiful too :) I personally love the cover of Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones (see my review http://lizataitbailey.com/2015/05/14/reading-mister-pip/) because I feel like the vibrancy of it is matches the main character Matilda and yet clashes with the evil acts dotted throughout the story. I always wonder what goes into choosing a book cover but I agree that a pretty cover will make me more likely to choose that book or spend more. Great post!

  5. The A Christmas Carol cover is one of my faves, too. All of the Clothbound Classics are gorgeous, but I think the Alice in Wonderland flamingo cover is my favourite. :)

  9. I'm a sucker for a good book cover. I have 5 copies of Dorian Gray because the covers are different and all equally beautiful. I also have the cloth Christmas Carol and Alice in Wonderland. I think I love you, Becky.

  10. I love the clothbound classics, they're so pretty. My favourites would have to be The Miniaturist - Jessie Burton and the Puffin In Bloom x Anna Bond - they are to die for!

  11. Oh so pretty! I definitely go for pretty covers... I just can't help it! I love your version of The Great Gatsby - never seen it before! Mines the Alma Classics version.

  12. I will only buy a book with a cover I find attractive unless somebody has told me it's good one or I've read a good review. One thing I'm not keen on about ebooks is that although they do display the cover of the book your reading when it's turned off it's just not the same. One of my favourite covers would have to be The Night Circus x

  13. I'm exactly the same - you can't judge a book by its cover but you can certainly choose to buy the best looking edition! I adore the cloth bound classics, I'd really like to own a complete set one day :)
