Review // Lush Superbalm Scalp Treatment

I've always suffered from a really dry scalp and it drives me mad! Thankfully it's not itchy or painful but it is very annoying. Since Lush is practically my home, I had a nose around to see what they could offer and discovered Superbalm Scalp Treatment.
Lush Superbalm Scalp Treatment review

PACKAGING

Superbalm comes in a 45g tin with a twist top which is really good for travelling as it's compact and leak-free. It's not part of the recycled pots programme but it's a very nice, old-fashioned tin so I intend to use it as storage when I've finished. Alternatively, you can probably take it into Lush and they'll recycle it for you like they do with shower gel lids.

CONSISTENCY & FRAGRANCE
Is Lush Superbalm any good?
The balm is of a very thick, waxy consistency in a moss green shade. Made from coconut oil, candelilla wax and rose wax, I find it's best stored at room temperature as it becomes hard to use if too cold and melts into a watery liquid in hot weather. Unfortunately, I find the scent very overpowering. At first, the fragrance of lavender and chamomile is quite pleasant but it's extremely strong and almost alcoholic. After a few minutes, it becomes overpowering and can make me feel a bit ill.

APPLICATION & RESULTS

I use Superbalm every time I wash my hair. I melt a little product between my fingers and massage it into my scalp. A little goes a long way, although I have to use quite a lot since so much of my scalp is dry. It does make your hair feel really greasy and horrible and, of course, the fragrance makes the experience more and more uncomfortable, but I try to leave the oils to sink into my scalp for around 20 minutes before washing it out. Thankfully the smell doesn't linger after washing! For a fairly unpleasant experience, I anticipated mega results but, unfortunately, they weren't as great as I'd expected. It does remove some of the flakes but my scalp returns to normal after 24 hours or so. Obviously I wasn't expecting it to cure my problem but a longer lasting result would have been preferable!
Blogger review of Lush Superbalm
It goes without saying that I probably won't be repurchasing Superbalm. I have just bought a scalp treatment from the Kitchen called Snake Oil, which I'm hoping will be more effective. Keep your eyes peeled and wish me luck!

  1. I got a little excited when I saw this crop up in my BL feed as I have a sensitive scalp as well, and I appreciate your honesty in your disappointment! Back to the drawing board for me I think!

  2. If the smell is that bad I don't think I could keep going! I really struggled with their Ultrabland as it had an amazing effect on my skin but the smell was just horrid - like stale beer! I love the cleanser but just can't get over the smell!

  5. Didn't they have another ultrabalm a few years ago that didn't have a specific purpose, or was multipurpose? Maybe they found it best for scalps and marketed for that?
I don't think a gross smell would make for a usable product for me!

    1. Ooh maybe. Unless you mean Ultrabland, which is marketed as a cleanser

  6. I only ever buy Lush's bath bombs and bubble bars but it is one of my favourite shops! I am soon excited by their Christmas bits!

  7. Thank you for your review of this Becky. I too suffer from a dry scalp. Like you it isn't sore or irritated but I do get flakes, which I'd obviously rather not have. I've been looking for more natural hair treatments to try and would have probably went for this. But given I can't handle overpowering scents and I only wash my hair around once a week, this looks like it wouldn't be suitable.

  10. Thank you so much for posting this. It's not often you see an unbiased review on a blog...usually it's paid placement so people sing praises and that's it. But I'm having a sore scalp and even with doctor's prescriptions it's not clearing up, so I'm investigating other options. I'm sensitive to smells so it was really useful to me that you mentioned that, and that even if I dealt with that, the product's effects might not be long-lasting enough to warrant use. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
