Review // Urban Decay Comfort Matte Vice Lipstick in Criminal

Matte pink lips are where it's at. Remember when House of Fraser asked me to review some make up on their site and I chose the Diorskin Airflash Foundation? At the same time, I was sent offered a lipstick and decided to try one from Urban Decay. Years ago, Helen convinced me to buy an Urban Decay lipstick, assuring me that they were amazing, and I was less than impressed (review here). It seemed only right that I give them another chance so settled on Comfort Matte Vice Lipstick in Criminal, partly because it was a matte pink but also largely because I liked the shade name.

PACKAGING

Since I know nothing about guns, I didn't think anything of the packaging until Rich asked why I had a shotgun shell on the coffee table. Turns out that is exactly what this looks like. I doubt it's a coincidence since Urban Decay are all edgy like that. With a pewter-coloured metallic lid that covers the entire lipstick emblazoned with the brand name, and a golden base, it looks pretty badass. The lipstick twists up to reveal the Urban Decay brand name stamped into the side of the bullet. When the lid is replaced, it clicks firmly shut (with a very satisfying noise, I might add). Since it's made of metal, it feels very secure and hardwearing but it does annoy me that there are permanently fingerprints mucking up the shiny surface!

APPLICATION

The tip of the lipstick is shaped into a sharp point which allows for precise application without a lipliner. As it's applied, there is a subtle taste and fragrance, almost like- excuse the terrible comparison here- Play-Doh. Sounds weird but now you all know exactly what this lipstick smells like, so... As it is applied, the bullet glides over the lips without any tugging or sticking. Even though it's a matte finish, it applies really smoothly and feels soft on the lips, giving an even, opaque finish straight away.

RESULTS

This lipstick is a Comfort Matte, rather than their more extreme Mega Matte, meaning it's creamier and less drying. Although the end result is matte, it looks more natural and is less likely to highlight any flakiness or dry patches. It's this finish which allows it to apply so easily. Criminal itself is a medium-dark pink with peachy undertones which gives a more dramatic natural look. It's incredibly pigmented and opaque with a creamy formula. The Vice lipsticks are formed with a range of natural oils including jojoba, aloe vera and avocado for a buttery, nourishing formula. This makes it much more comfortable to wear than traditional matte lipsticks although the downside is that it doesn't last quite as long and I've found it transfers easily. However, it does fade evenly and retains that matte finish, even when the intensity of the shade has diminished.

I'm very glad that I gave Urban Decay another shot. This lipstick is going to be perfect for both day and night, and I know I'm going to get a lot of wear out of it! Now I just need to decide which shade to try next!
