#WonderfulViews in the Austrian Alps
Hey, you know I love the Alps? Of course you do, I never stop banging on about it! The Untersberg in Salzburg is my favourite place in the world- there's nothing like standing at the peak and looking down over the beautiful scenery below, or being surrounded by clouds if it's overcast. It's like being in heaven! It's hard to explain my love for this place, so consider this post an ode to the Untersberg.
There is nowhere else on earth that I would experience the absolute terror of my certain impending death just to reach, but that's how much I love this place. Honestly, the cable car is terrifying. It lasts less than 10 minutes though and the whole experience is so worth it because when you reach the top, there is nothing like it.
First of all, it's incredibly quiet. Even when there are loads of fellow tourists milling about, being 1800m above the city means there are no sounds except gentle chatter, the wind and the birds milling around. This gives a real sense of peace and serenity, and I always feel like I've left my problems in the city below. Suddenly the dilemmas of life don't seem to matter any more when I look down on the tiny little towns at the foot of the mountain.
The towns aren't the best part of the view, however. For miles and miles, you can see mountain peaks stretched across the horizon and it's the most magical thing. The Untersberg is pocketed in the border of Austria so it's surrounded by Germany. I love the idea of walking over the border and keep promising myself I'll do it at some point, just so I can say 'Oh yeah I walked from Austria to Germany and back again'. It sounds impressive, even if it isn't really!
One of the things that has so far put me off hiking over to Germany is the fact that I have very little practical knowledge of walking across mountainous terrain. Getting a cable car and hiking a few hundred metres up a clearly defined path is very different to setting off for a full-on stroll around. This is where Inntravel come in.
Inntravel describe themselves as the 'slow holiday people', so they're the perfect choice if you prefer to take your time exploring your surroundings and taking in natural beauty. They organise walking and cycling holidays all over Europe, including the Austrian Alps. Every holiday is planned by Inntravel, with routes that are tried and tested, so rather than worrying about finding your way, you can just relax and admire the views. Since the holidays are individual, rather than group, you're free to make your own decisions and go wherever you like at your own pace. Sounds ideal, right?
I recommend the Austrian Alps to absolutely everyone because there's nothing like it. If you're looking for a peaceful, relaxing break surrounded by nature, you absolutely must visit!
