Book Wishlist // True Crime

I've spoken before about how much true crime fascinates me. For some reason, crime fiction has never interested me, and horror gives me nightmares for weeks, but if it's a true story, I'm all over it. A lot of my Amazon wish list is dedicated to this subject but I've chosen a select few to share with you.

PLAYING DEAD: A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WORLD OF DEATH FRAUD
This book looks at why people fake their own death and promises to be a light-hearted. humorous examination of the topic. As a teen, I was fascinated by the case of 'Canoe Man' John Darwin, who faked his own death in a canoe accident, and I've wondered how possible it is. Although this book hasn't got great reviews on Amazon, it still sounds like something I'd love.

COLUMBINE
There aren't many crimes in the past twenty years that have had as big an impact as the Columbine shootings. This book has a lot of very positive reviews and is supposed to be incredibly well-researched. I'm also really drawn to the cover- it has a very serene feel which I find quite clever.

ONE OF US: THE STORY OF A MASSACRE AND ITS AFTERMATH
In a similar vein, this book tells the story of Anders Breivik and his attack in Norway. Again, it has great reviews and has been praised for its thorough research. With the far right rising, I feel it's important to confront this and One of Us can certainly claim to be doing that.

LOBSTER BOY
A few months ago, I was up late at night watching some crime channel and they had a documentary about Grady Stiles Jr, a man with a condition that caused his hands to form in the form of pincers. He made his money travelling with carnivals under the title of Lobster Boy. A violent man, he killed his daughter's boyfriend before he was himself murdered. Lobster Boy looks at the evidence surrounding his death to come to a new conclusion as to who the killer was. Apparently the author was threatened while researching the book but continued to write it in a desire to get to the truth. I'm not sure how much is truth and how much is sensationalism but it sounds like an interesting read nonetheless.

MURDERS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM
Back in 2014, I visited an exhibition of items from the Black Museum which houses evidence from the most significant crimes in London and is usually only accessible if you work in the police force. This book was for sale in the museum shop but I'd already bought one book and didn't fancy lugging a whole bag of them around London. It takes a look at some of the exhibits and shares the stories behind them.

MYRA HINDLEY: INSIDE THE MIND OF A MURDERESS
I own a fair few books on the Moors Murders and this book has been on my list forever. It was one of the first books written about the case and the author was present in court during the trial. I think it may be a little inaccurate since it was written in a hurry to capitalise on the publicity but the fact it was written so close to the case is very interesting.

To be honest, I have far too many unread books at the moment as it is and I'm trying to limit how many new ones I buy until I've cut down my pile a bit. Still, writing this post has made me really want to buy some more. Oops!
