Diaries behind-the-scenes: The Emo Years

Yay! Time for the emo years! This is going to be a pretty long post but, boy, it's a treat! For reference, this is what I looked like at the time:

Billie-Jo (December 2004- March 2005)
Sorry, Piglet and Eeyore!

Marnie (March 2005)
2005 was an amazing year! Can we go back to this please?
Wow, I really do sound like a cool rocker!

Gerard (April- July 2005)
Casual Papa Roach lyrics. And does that say "Revise Against"? What's that all about? Is that genuinely what I thought they were called or is it some sort of long-forgotten joke?
I was obsessed with the concept of revenge, as you'll soon see. It looks like I kept a record of vengeance quotes. Slightly weird.

Frankie (July- September 2005)
Get ready for this, guys. This was the apex of my emo years!
Food-related band name puns. I don't know.
Just illustrating My Chemical Romance songs. Blood-dripping fangs and staked hearts. Standard.
I love this! A record of what I spent in one month. Piercings, Kerrang, phone credit and candy floss. There's nothing more emo than candy floss!
Oh my goodness, this is embarrassing!
Oh wait,  here's a poem I wrote. Yes, that says "The cavern where I hide myself". Oh dear!
Dead flowers and razor blading hearts. And eyes. Lots of eyes.
My Chemical Romance lyrics and more eyes. This one is crying. It's so hard being emo, you guys!
More crying eyes and look! I'm so emo, I have to label my diaries with the word!
Have I mentioned the fact that I'm emo yet? Wait, is that another crying eye at the top?
Dear 17 year old Becky: Stop drawing tears and sort your life out!
"I haven't tears enough"? I'd argue otherwise.
Vote My Chemical Romance!
I don't know if I've mentioned it yet, but I was an emo goddess!

Bertie (September- December 2005)
Still obsessing over the average grades, as I did with my GCSEs. Also nice to see that my EMA was being spent productively (The Adge is a rock club).

Ville Valo (December 2005- April 2006)
Still drawing tears, Becky? Really?
This is when I thought I liked Him.

Jepha (April- June 2006)
We're making progress: That eye isn't crying! Now we just need to get over the whole revenge thing.
Well this doesn't look like angry scribbling at all.

Wednesday (November 2006- February 2007)
I have absolutely no idea what this is about.

  3. Great post! I went through a stage like this but if I posted pictures from my diary at that point I would probably die of embarrassment. :)

  4. I worry about you...

You were mistaken for thinking you liked Him, no one liked Him, Becky!

You really like My Chemical Romance, like, really like them.

    1. I know! I didn't say I DID like Him! I just said I THOUGHT I liked Him!

Have you only just realised that I really like MCR?

  5. This made me chuckle so hard! I can totally relate to this. I 'adored' Him. I think I still have their album somewhere... Laughed so much at 'Revise Against' too. I'm so disappointed I didn't keep my old diaries!

    1. I had one of their CDs too but I think I only ever listened to Buried Alive by Love. I wish I knew if Revise Against was purposeful or a really bizarre accident!

  6. Oh my god, I just laughed so hard I nearly choked - this was SO me circa age 14-15! PAPA ROACH. I forgot they even existed!! I think I actually saw them live at a festival in 2005.

I wish I had all my diaries but I was so overly embarrassed about everything and every boy I had a crush on that I'm pretty sure I destroyed them all in case my parents found them!

I remember when I used to wear giant jeans that were so flared you could have fitted a person up each leg. And see-through black lace tops. And bunny ears. I wore bunny ears everywhere for no reason around that time. Man, I was a cool kid.

This is one of my favourite blog posts I've ever read.

    1. Haha I used to wear those jeans too! I actually tripped over one of the legs once, around Christmas time, and an old man behind me said "On the Christmas sherry already?" Mortifying!

I also used to wear bunny ears (light up ones, no less!) to every gig I went to. What was that all about?

    2. Oh gosh I used to wear those too. I had a pair of vibrant purple ones in a cord material. They were far too long and far too loose on the waist but I thought I was so scene.

  8. I think it's awesome that you share this with all of us! I kept diaries during my teenage years and I feel SO embarrassed to read them, it's like I feel ashamed of who I was, instead of understanding that we all grow up and evolve at some point... Can't help feeling ridiculous about my former private writings though. I never went through an emo phase... Maybe just a punk/goth/grunge thing that made me feel like self-mutilating to Nirvana's music or tryin' to convince my mom to let me do the mohican cut... Not so good ol' times. Thanks for sharing this! :) x

    1. Aaw, you shouldn't be ashamed of it! My emo times were such dark years but they made me who I am today. It's probably the same for you.

  11. That Papa Roach song! I swear it was the anthem of my teenage years! Also would like to ask the question, who didn't think they liked Him as a teenager? Pretty sure for a while there I was completely Ville Valo obsessed! xx
