Shooting from the hip

It was a remarkably sunny day today, so we decided to head over to the nearest shopping centre to visit Primark and pick up a canvas for an awesome project I'm working on with my friend @Moss_Oltov.

I took out my Diana F+, and managed to shoot the four pictures that I aimed to take each week. So far April is looking pretty good! I also thought it would be fun to snap a load of photos without looking through the viewfinder, or aiming in any way, and seeing what the results were. Here are some of my favourites.
Have you ever taken this approach to photography? What were the results like?

  1. I also own Diana F+ and I've just had my very first three rolls of film developed. Unfortunately most of them were blurry, but I loved them anyway :) Whatever turns out is great, magical and pretty. Just as 'lomo ideology' states xD

  2. I rather enjoy taking this approach at gigs or festivals when you get sick of trying to get a good photo and just shoot without looking, I've found that way I can get some decent shots and enjoy the show haha.
But I think this is a great way to catch a photo of something you might have missed. I love the photo of the railings!

  3. Ooh, I love these. I think the wrought iron fence is my favourite. I should try this out sometime, it's a neat idea.

  5. Great results! Shooting from the hip is how often my favourite photographer took her work - Vivian Maier who was predominately a street photographer her work is incredible.

  7. I've never thought of shooting like this, but having seen some of your shots I could be persuaded! The iron railings shot is definitely my fave. Because I live on an island I take a lot of landscape stuff but it would be interesting to try shooting like this to see the difference between those and the more 'composed' shots I take! x
