Summer Reading List

Last summer I didn't get much reading done due to the whole wedding shebang but, the year before, I devoted my summer to reading 1Q84. I actually completed it in about 3 weeks in the end, so I didn't need that long, but I do think summer is the perfect time to tackle longer texts. Initially, I was planning to take on War and Peace this year but I think it will hold me back from finally, finally, reaching my 50 book annual goal. Instead, I've compiled a list of shorter texts to work my way through this summer.
ANIMAL FARM

I wasn't a fan of 1984 but it was a quick read, at least. General perception seems to be that Animal Farm is a much stronger text than the former so fingers crossed!

HOT FEMINISM

Ooh, you better believe I'm looking forward to this one! It's caused so much discussion and I cannot wait to delve in. I have a sneaking suspicion I might actually agree with a lot of it!

CRASH

I read this a long, long time ago but can't really remember a huge amount of it so the time is right for a reread.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS

Somehow, I avoided studying this during my A levels so it hasn't been completely ruined for me. My only knowledge is the Kate Bush song and something about a man with a feather in his hat who may or may not only be in one of the film adaptations (he was a great source of amusement to my friends doing a different English Literature syllabus).

THE TALES OF BEEDLE THE BARD
FANTASTIC BEASTS & WHERE TO FIND THEM

QUIDDITCH THROUGH THE AGES

I got this beautiful boxset when Leona and I went to the Warner Bros Studio Tour at Christmas and I love it! I'll be very careful when reading the books!

THE SLAP

A good few years ago, my Grandma read this book and absolutely loved it. Ever since, she's kept talking about it so I was meaning to give it a go. Recently I found this copy in a charity shop so I thought it was high time to dive in.

I also want to get through some of my Penguin Little Black Books such as:

THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO

THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON

THE GREAT WINGLEBURY DUEL

LORD ARTHUR SAVILE'S CRIME

THE TELL-TALE HEART

13 books in 10 weeks. Is that a bit optimistic?

  1. Fab reading list... I think 13 books in 10 weeks is definitely possible! I study English Literature at university so kind of stay away from classics in the summer, but I still have so much I want to read over the next few weeks... but more lighthearted stuff haha! ;) x

  2. Wow that's definitely a lot of books. I read Animal Farm when I was really young, and it's definitely a good read, although I'm not really sure I appreciated it for what it is back then. I'm actually currently reading my dad's book!

  4. This is a great list! I'm trying not to add each title to my TBR pile. I will say Wuthering Heights is my absolutely favourite book of all time, it is not the smoothest read and you may lose your way on your first attempt but it truly is a classic. I'm currently reading the Communist Manifesto and can't believe I waited this long! Enjoy your Summer xx

  5. So, I'm taking a mini break from Nectar Chat and totally stalking your blog. My goodness. These books look SO GOOD. Also, Hot Feminist? Definitely caught my eye, especially since I identify as one. I've read Wuthering Heights before and I enjoyed it. I think 13 books in 10 weeks is doable. Go for it, Becky!

  6. I also have the Hogwarts Library on my reading list for this summer and am totally looking forward to it. I was not a big fan of The Slap but hopefully you will enjoy it.

  7. That's a great list - Crash is one of my all-time favourites! I know you've read it before, but if you fancy reading more Ballard, I *highly* recommend Concrete Jungle and The Crystal World. Concrete Jungle is more similar to Crash with themes, and The Crystal World has a similar writing style and Ballard's distinctive descriptive tones, but more sci-fi based? I'm a fan, if you couldn't tell...

  8. I watched that miniseries based on The Slap on NBC earlier this year! I'm not sure if I really enjoyed it or not, all the characters were kinda jerks! It really makes you think, though.
