My diaries 1998- 2003

Aged 10, I began a diary with the words "I fancy a boy called Alex. I hope I will get famous by writing in my diary like Anne Frank and Samuel Peepes". 14 years later, I am still writing in a diary, although it's not the same book, of course. In fact, it's the 25th book that I'm on now and I have to keep them all stored in a massive cardboard box.
My diaries are so important to me. I've documented every moment of my life as I've grown up, both my best day and my worst were recorded immediately. They provide an instant resource to my own past, a key to my memories that can be unlocked at any time. Most importantly, though, nobody has ever read them. They hold my deepest and darkest secrets.

I thought it might be fun to go through each diary and record some of the best quotes from them. Obviously I won't be sharing anything too personal but, if you've ever wanted to delve into the psyche of 10 year old Becky (well, you might have!), then read on!

Since there are so many, I will do this as a series with 3 diaries in each post. I'll keep all spelling, punctuation and grammar intact. Each diary has a name, which retrospectively provides a glimpse to who I was at that time.

Cally (20th March 1999- 7th April 2002)
A bit about me:
I fancy a boy called Alex. I hope I will get famous by writing in my diary, like Anne Frank and Samuel Peepes. I've tried writing a diary twice but they were only not books- I lost one and couldn't keep up with the other. [Later] I don't fancy Alex anymore. I have a boyfriend called Ashley"

24th May 1999
"For my birthday party, I am allowed Katie sleepover on Saturday, say, and on Sunday (my birthday) we go to the cinema and some posh restruant like pizza hut."

3rd September 1999
"In the last 2-ish months I have been getting through the latest craze- 'Harry Potter' books".

26th January 2002
"I went 2 snaps [local disco] yestrda- it was so cool! [My friends] said I needed a boy to dance wiv so they went 2 ask one if he'd dance wiv me... He said yes so I danced wiv him then he asked me 2 get in wiv him so I did. My first kiss!"

Emma-Rae (8th April 2002- 9th January 2003)

A bit about me:
I hope I will get famous by writing in my diary like Anne Frank or Samuel Peepes. You are my 2nd diary. I've finished my first one, Cally. I had her for 3 years and I hope you're going to be as faithful to me as she was.
I have light brown, long-ish, curly hair and wear small red glasses. I'm 13 years old and I'll hide you with Cally".

13th April 2002
"I've just got back from my dancing presentation. In 2 dance Latin- Paso Doble and Jive- we came THIRD! Can you believe that- third. Oh my god- I still can't believe it- now I know exactly how Halle Berry felt when she won the oscar!"

16th May 2002
"On a Yahoo search we typed in my name and I was on there! How cool is that. The real me!"

7th January 2003
"This is so cool- I just got a fruit 'n' nut with two wrappers! I thought it was mouldy just then but it's just the raisins showing through the chocolate!"

Tallulah (18th January 2003- 13th June 2003)

A bit about me:
I hope that one day I'll get famous for my diary like Anne Frank or Samuel Pepes. You are my third diary. My last two were called Cally and Emma-Rae. I had Cally for three years and Emma-Rae for eight months, and I hope you will be as faithful to me as they were.
I have mousy blonde/ brown, longish, curly hair and small greeny-coloured glasses. I'm 14 years old and I've fancied a boy called Chris for 16 months."

20th January 2003
"Myles has got this orange that he's left in my room overnight, and it's all stale, and he was actually going to eat it!... Myles was just sick in the bin (because of the orange) but he seems to be ok now- well, he's atacking Jamie which has to be a good sign!"

20th May 2003
"I'm like the stereotypical geek- frizzy hair, glasses, braces (nearly)!... I love Marie- she's so honest. When I took my glasses off, she said "You've got dark circles under your eyes, love. You need more sleep" and she said that I'll be fine once I get my brace on and off again"

3rd June 2003
"No one seems to like me. I've gone from being treated like a godess to a mere mortal. Well, I'm not special anymore, am I?"

  5. I really love this, love how you used the word 'wiv' ;)
I wish I had kept mine. I burnt all the pages because they were all filled with how much I hated my parents and school!
Just your average teenage rants ;)

  6. So hilarious! I love the one about the double chocolate wrapper. I absolutely love reading my old diaries, I wish I had kept them on. I remember my first one was from when I stayed at my nannys house with my uncle Brain (Brian) and my nanny had bought me a Spice Girls tshirt and pink stick on nails and I thought this was absolutely amazing!

    1. That line makes me laugh so much! Why did I think I'd need to know about that 12 years later?

    1. My commitment has certainly waned in the last 5 years. These days, I write maybe once every 3 months or so. It's a shame.

  12. I daren't look at my old diaries, I cringe at even how I reacted to things I still feel sad about today. The last line makes me sad, but I guess it demonstrates how teenagers think.

    1. The next few diaries after this one are the saddest. There's one entry in particular that I still find really difficult to read. Luckily, I wrote that one in code so it takes quite a bit of effort to actually read it.

  13. This is absolute gold! When I kept a diary, my sister always found them, forked them open however she could (she actually cut the locks on a few of them) and read them aloud to her friends. Needless to say, I didn't keep diaries for very long!

  17. Oh my goodness Becky, this: 'some posh restruant like pizza hut' killed me.
I love that you keep diaries, I never had the patience to keep up with diary keeping but I wish I had. My mum recently found her diaries from when she met my Dad (aged 14-ish) and predicted they'd get married-so special. Thank you for sharing these!

That's so sweet! I once discovered my mum's diaries from when she was 15, and it was all about some guy she fancied. So cute!

  18. BWAHAHAHA. This made my day. I thought I had a lot with 13 journals, just starting the 14th. I'm the same way, I love being able to look back and know exactly what happened. I don't think I'll ever stop writing in them.
