Emo Revisited

Yesterday it was one year since My Chemical Romance announced their split. Not gonna lie, I'm still pretty choked up about it. I blogged about it at the time but they were more than a band for me when I was in my late teens- They were a voice that understood, a refuge of people who knew what I felt like. Before discovering them, I thought I was alone. They made me realise that I wasn't. So when they ended, it was more the symbolism that I was upset about losing: It felt like I was saying goodbye to that part of my life. 2004-2006 was the most significant, upsetting and yet overwhelmingly free time of my life, and I think it always will be. Losing My Chemical Romance was losing my link to those days. It was finally time to cut ties with that era and I was surprised by how difficult I found it.

In honour of this event (and the upcoming release of their final album), I thought it would be fun to go full-on emo for a day. It's important to point out that these are all entirely tongue in cheek. Having said that, these are genuinely items of clothing and styling that I would have worn on any given day in 2005!

This tutu was pretty much the only thing I wore in the summer of 2005. I even wore it to Thorpe Park and got a surprising amount of abuse!

My trusty stripy socks! The red and black ones were my favourite but I think they're still in a drawer at my mum's house.
My glass heart is broken guis </3
Dear Jack, sometimes I feel like you're the only one who understands me. You're my best friend.
 Myspace angles!
And just to prove that I'm not actually regressing to a full-on emo kid, here's a photo of me smiling. Isn't it funny how this look makes me look about 10 years younger? Maybe there's something in it!

  1. I actually really really like your hair like that! Love the photos, it's always fun seeing posts like these from people that are roughly the same age as me. I was never a full on emo kid but I did own pretty much all black for about 5 years...

    1. Haha I'm sorry but I wouldn't have been allowed to talk to you in my teens. Us emo kids would not be seen mixing with the scene kids haha! I'd LOVE to see those photos!

  7. I completely went through an emo phase too...which was accompanied by obsessive amounts of manga, lots of dark purple nailpolish, and the constant plea for my mother to take me to Hot Topic to buy more eyeliner. Thank the Lord we all grow up <3

    loved the post!

  11. Firstly: MCR breaking up was one of the hardest days of my life, so thank you hugely for making me feel less silly about that - you understand it and have perfectly encapsulated and expressed how I felt.

Secondly: Your hair is amazing! It's so tall, I love it. :)
Tutu, Jack Skellington teddy, MySpace angle...everything about this post makes me happy. Thank you Becky!

    1. I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I have to admit, I felt a bit silly being so upset about it but I won't feel ashamed. They were a HUGE part of my life at a very difficult time so I have a real affinity with them.

Maybe I should turn emo again? ;)

  13. ahahaha that makeup! That is my teen years right there! This whole post actually, it's like looking at myself in high school all over again. Though I was more into the Criminal Damage bondage pants than tutu's. I did have the stripey socks down xD

    1. True fact: I tripped over my own bondage trousers and an old man laughed at me. Oh, the shame!

  14. Hahahaha this post is GREAT! Awww yeah, girl. This is exactly how I looked when I was fifteen! Teased hair with the straight ends and all. And stripey socks were THE thing to have! You're amazing.
