Summer Fayre

Every single year, for the past 8 years at least, it has rained on my birthday weekend. You'd think that having a birthday in the middle of June would guarantee a sunny time but no. I put this down to the fact that Download Festival is always on the weekend closest to my birthday. As with Glastonbury and Reading weekends, it's the law that it has to rain at a festival.

Today was the summer fayre in a playing field close to my house. We left the house into bright sunlight but, of course, within two minutes of stepping out of the door, it started raining. Then it rained a bit more. Then a little more. Within 20 minutes, there was a full-on monsoon going on.

To be honest, I love a bit of rain during these events. Is there anything more English than powering on through the rain? Well, yes, actually. Morris dancing in the rain!

I have a confession: I love morris dancers. What's not to love? Bells, funny hats with flowers on, sticks, hankies and accordians!

There's nothing more delightful than grown, bearded men skipping together whilst holding hands with bells around their knees and flowers on their heads! Did I mention the accordians?

This Chinese dragon was doing the rounds too. I'm not entirely sure why. I don't know who he was representing or promoting but the guys controlling him were pretty good. Not at all camera shy either!

I couldn't for the life of me work out which way the head was meant to go! It looks exactly the same from both angles!

There was also a procession through the streets nearby with a marching band. I love marching bands! Nothing sounds more exciting than the distant boom-boom of that big drum in the middle!

The Chinese dragon made another appearance for the procession and he looked like he was loving it! Look at his happy little face!
I snapped a sneaky photo of off-duty morris dancers. I wonder if they'll let me join their gang?
Right, I'm off to buy an accordian and some bells!
