10pm challenge

Don't get me wrong, I love sleep. Waking up is a form of torture for me, but I hate going to bed. No matter how tired I am, I always find a reason to stay up "just another half hour" and end up going to bed in the early hours of the morning. Of course this means I end up sleeping in late on the days I'm not working, and absolutely exhausted on the days I am. The lack of any sleeping routine is becoming frustrating so, last week, Rich challenged me to go to bed at 10pm every night for a week. I didn't need to go to sleep at 10, but I had to be in bed.

Monday Evening
After a full day of work on 3 hours of sleep, I was exhausted by bedtime. I went up to bed at 10pm and ended up reading for another two hours but at least I was sleeping earlier than usual.

Tuesday
Somehow, when the alarm woke me up, I felt more tired than ever! I spent the whole day practically comatose and couldn't wait to have a lie in the following day. After a long, tiring day at work, I ended up failing on my second day and didn't go to bed until 11pm. I went to sleep half an hour later though, so I guess, in a way, I was more successful than Monday night.

Wednesday
Rich woke me up at 11:30am. So much for my anticipated early mornings! Needless to say, I didn't go to sleep until late. Whoops!

Thursday
I had to wake up early as I had an appointment so this made me sleepy all day due to the lack of sleep the night before. I resisted the urge to nap and ended up going to bed at 10pm exactly. Finally back on track!

Friday
Of course I was still tired when the alarm went off but at least I didn't feel like I was dying. Unfortunately, I was possibly a bit too awake and went to bed at midnight. Oh dear!

Saturday
Marie was picking me up at 12:30... I woke up at 12:10. All day I was absolutely exhausted, which makes no sense as I had so much sleep the night before! When I got home at about 10:30, I was so tired that I had a quick bath and went straight to bed. Maybe this bedtime routine is working?

Sunday
Something magical has happened! I woke up at 9:45 on a Sunday and I wasn't even sleepy! After a week, I think I've finally cracked it!

Week of bedtimes over, perhaps there is something in this nightly routine thing. However, I don't think it's going to be as simple as fixing it in a week. As much as I hate to say this, I might need to invest a little longer in sorting my sleeping pattern out.

  1. I loved reading this blogpost! My bed time routine has been messed up for years now, but when I do go to bed early, I feel so much better the next day! But I always go back to my old ways because...well... the night is young, I keep telling myself! My new years resolution should be to get more sleep and go to bed at a decent time! x

  2. Sleeping patterns do take a while to come into effect. My body clock is pretty on the dot every day because of work. Though I do also go to bed about 9pm every night! Good luck with it :) xx

  3. I find that resisting a nap and making myself get up at a reasonable(ish) time helps keep my sleeping pattern regular... Also trying not to look at my phone in bed. Hard to stick to that one though! X

  4. My sleeping pattern has been terrible lately, I've not been going to bed till 2am and then waking up at midday on my days off. I need to set myself a target like this! x

  5. Loved this post! I don't really have a set evening routine but I always wake up at about 8:30 every morning, which is really weird when you think about it. Glad you cracked it!

  6. It definitely takes longer than a week to sort out you sleeping routine, a month might be the magic time. I used to be a serious night owl. Going to sleep before 1am was early for me. Then when my work shifts changed and I had to be up at 6am I just couldn't stay up late anymore and I adjusted. Now even on days off I'm asleep by midnight and in bed by 10pm.

  7. Hey... My sleeping routine is exactly same as urs. I too love to sleep but hate going to bed then get up late in the morning. I too should try this

  8. My bedtime routine isn't too bad - I try to be attempting to sleep by 11. But I could definitely do with turning technology off earlier! x

  9. I actually DO go to sleep at 10PM every night. I am much more of a morning person so going to bed at 10 lets me wake up at 7AM. I love doing my to-do list before work so that then afterwards I can just relax and watch Netflix, lol. I'm weird though. Everyone is annoyed by me in the morning because I'm so talkative.

  10. I definitely need to go to bed earlier...I'm just like you: there's always an excuse to stay open another half hour! (another blog post to read? Another magazine article? Youtube video? lol) Maybe there's something to be said for getting a bit more sleep...you've definitely inspired me to try!

  11. I'm exactly the same, love my bed but don't like going to bed early. it doesn't help working shifts so some days working lates I can technically get up at midday but then if i'm on an early the next day, because i've got up so late that day I can't sleep and have to be up at 6.15am meaning i'm super-tired that day. I need routine!

  12. I've always been a night owl too, and it worked when my son was little as I was able to mould his sleeping pattern to work around my late shifts at work. Now that he's older, he's been getting up between half seven and eight. I still haven't cracked the habit of going to bed early, so I'm usually functioning on three or four hours sleep a night. My boyfriend started a new course recently, and has been trying to get me to go to bed early with him. So far, I'm usually sneaking into bed in the early hours trying not to wake him. I think I'll have to set myself this challenge once the Christmas festivities are out of the way!

  13. Interesting challenge. I'm trying to do something similar as well. It's not going too well though, ha ha. Ideally I'd love to go to bed at 10/10.30 and wake up at 7am. Good luck to you - keep at it! :) x

  14. Sleep routines are the bane of my life. I like to be in bed around 10-10:30 and on good days I can be asleep by 11ish. But with insomnia coming and going and in the last year or so, it pretty much flares up (or whatever word is good there) every Sunday night with the impeding doom of work, I have a shite routine for sleeping.

At the same time, I go the other way and sometimes I can sleep for hours and hours for a few weeks... usually coinciding with bad times with depression.

    Sleep is such a pain.

  15. I have the same kind of problem and at the moment it's getting worse. When I worked 9 - 5 I wasn't too bad but now I'm at home most of the time I think I'm becoming nocturnal! Previously my bedtime was usually 2 am but after a bout of insomnia it's shifting more towards 3/4am and then I don't wake up until around 11am the next day. Most of the time it doesn't affect me too badly but if I'm working in London and have to get up at maybe 3/4/5 am it's not ideal x

  16. It takes longer than a week to get into a good bedtime routine :) I'm awful, especially because I'm a student but so far I'm just taking it as it comes. I'm doing better than last year and I seem to be able to cope well on very little sleep, in fact no matter how late I go to bed I always end up waking up at like 9am every morning! x
